Fake Doctor Ran Skyros Hospital for 13 Years
An unbelievable fact was revealed in Skyros. A fake doctor without a degree ran Skyros Hospital for 13 years. Ioannis Kastanis had applied for the job submitting fake degrees from “La Sapienza” University of Rome to the Ministry of Health in 1999. The fraud went public a few days ago on May 15. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Health issued an order where his designation as General Medicine Chief of Skyros Regional Hospital was revoked. The doctor was appointed in this position on January 17, 2000, having received the approval of the Secretary General. His degree was recognized by the Greek center for the recognition of foreign qualifications (Dikatsa) and the translations of the certificates were validated from police authorities. However, whether the certificates were originally true or not was never checked. The fraud basically began in 1993, when Ioannis Kastanis acquired authorization to pursue the occupation of doctor. His qualification was issued by the Public Health authorities of Argolida Prefecture and enabled him to practice in Patras Agios Andreas Hospital and later to be designated in Skyros. His presence in Skyros was provocative since he always drove his Ferrari car and had a private airplane in his possession. The Greek Ministry of Health started researching his case after a complaint was filed by a citizen. The results announced by the Health Inspectors Union were shocking. “La Sapienza” University of Rome had no registry of his name as a doctor. Besides all his certificates being fake, he also had three tax registration numbers and three ID cards. A criminal prosecution is pending against him, but Mr. Kastanis has disappeared.
