New Saint Nicholas Church Mimics Aghia Sophia
NEW YORK - The fascinating saga surrounding the rebuilding of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at Ground Zero, which was among the many buildings to crumble on Sept. 11, 2001 and which was almost denied the opportunity to re-emerge as part of the new World Trade Center complex, continues to receive major media coverage, most recently evidenced by an article in the October 31 issue of the New York Times. The piece speaks to the Church?s Byzantine design, which reflects the architectural style of Ancient Islamic Mosques in Turkey and is an interesting phenomenon, considering the backlash against an actual mosque and Islamic cultural center that opened two years ago near Ground Zero.
