Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias participated via videotaped message in the informal EU-Latin America the Caribbean/LAC Ministerial Meeting, which took place online today, 14 December 2020, in Berlin. The Minister of Foreign Affairs’ intervention was made during the discussion on Green Partnership. In his message, the Minister of Foreign Affairs supported the prospects for enhancing cooperation between the EU and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean – cooperation, which is based on long-standing historical, cultural and economic ties. The Minister of Foreign Affairs focused in particular on the priorities concerning the environment, noting the exceptional natural wealth of Latin America and the impact of climate change, which knows no borders. He praised the contribution of the EU-LAC dialogue for capitalising on the comparative advantages of each side with respect to climate change and to energy transition to more environmentally friendly energy sources and renewable energy sources. In this context, Mr. Dendias pointed to the need for economic development and environmental protection to proceed in tandem, underscoring the importance of sustainable growth. He highlighted the European Union’s ‘Green Partnership’ initiative and set out the national plans for energy, renewable energy sources and the climate, which are being promoted in combination with the toolkit of the European funds and the Recovery Fund, with a view to prioritising appropriate investments. Finally, Mr. Dendias highlighted Greece’s interest in promoting joint initiatives with the LAC countries in a number of fields for cooperation, on the basis of experience acquired so far.

The 4th round of interministerial consultations on the level of Deputy Ministers/Secretaries General, in the context of the Greek-German Action Plan, was held successfully via videoconference from 8 to 10 December 2020. The Greek delegation was headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kostas Fragogiannis, and the German delegation was headed by Mr. Fragogiannis counterpart, Miguel Berger. Ten Ministries participated in the Greek delegation, and eight in the German delegation. In the sectoral consultations, the competent officials from each side discussed deepening of bilateral cooperation in the sectors of political relations, migration, security, economy, technology, trade and exports, energy and climate protection, agriculture and foods, tourism, science, welfare, culture, education, labour and local administration.
