This week the level of new daily cases has risen to levels last seen in mid-June, prompting the government to impose measures to combat the spread of the pandemic. 5.18pm BST Greece is banning flights to and from Barcelona from Monday as health authorities extend most of the travel restrictions for foreign visitors by three weeks due to a surge in infections. The rise in cases in recent weeks has forced Greek authorities to gradually reimpose restrictions in the capital Athens and other areas, including popular islands at the peak of tourism season.
