After a gruelling lockdown period during the coronavirus pandemic, Italy was once again able to sip cappuccino and cold beers – albeit at a physical distance from other customers. The World Health Organization (WHO) guidance on face masks has remained consistent during the coronavirus pandemic. It has stuck to the line that masks are for healthcare workers – not the public.  Epidemics of infectious diseases behave in different ways but the 1918 influenza pandemic that killed more than 50 million people is regarded as a key example of a pandemic that occurred in multiple waves, with the latter more severe than the first.
