1 CLIMATE LAW: Amid fierce criticism from environmental activists, the European Commission unveiled plans Wednesday in Brussels for its first climate law, which will act as the basis of the European Union’s aim to make the 27-country bloc climate neutral by 2050. However, there is no plan to increase the bloc’s overall emissions goal for 2030. This particular point has been criticized by climate activists, who claim that delaying the upgraded 2030 target is detrimental to the bloc’s credibility in the fight against climate change. 2 BORDER CLASH: Greek authorities fired tear gas and stun grenades Wednesday to repulse a push by migrants to cross its land border from Turkey, as pressure continued along its frontier after Turkey said its own border with Europe was open to whoever wanted to cross. Turkish authorities said one person was killed and five were wounded by fire coming from the Greek side — an assertion the Greek government strongly rejected as “fake news.” The clashes were near the border village of Kastanies, along a border fence that covers much of the frontier not demarcated by the Evros river. 3 FILMMAKER SUMMONED: An Iranian filmmaker who just won the Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear has been summoned to serve a one-year prison sentence over his movies, his lawyer said Wednesday. Mohammad Rasoulof’s sentence came from three films he made that authorities found to be “propaganda against the system,” his lawyer Nasser Zarafshan said. Rasoulof’s sentence also included an order than he stop his filmmaking for two years as well, the lawyer said. Rasoulof received the order via a text message from the judiciary, Zarafshan said.
