1 GREECE QUAKE: A strong earthquake struck Friday about 14 miles north of Greece’s capital of Athens, causing residents to run into the streets and firefighters to check for people trapped in elevators. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude of 5.3. Authorities inspected areas around the epicenter by helicopter and police patrols, but no deaths or serious injuries were reported. Several buildings suffered damage across the city. The quake also caused limited power cuts and communication problems. 2 MASSACRE RULING: The Dutch Supreme Court on Friday upheld a lower court’s ruling that the Netherlands is partially liable in the deaths of 350 Muslim men who slain by Bosnian Serb forces during the 1995 Srebrenica massacre. The court in The Hague ruled that Dutch United Nations peacekeepers evacuated the men from their military base near Srebrenica on July 13, 1995, despite knowing that they “were in serious jeopardy of being abused and murdered” by Bosnian Serb forces. Presiding Judge Kees Streefkerk said relatives of the dead can now claim compensation from the Dutch government. The court said relatives of the slain men are eligible to claim 10% of their financial damages because the court estimated the men would have had a 10% chance of survival if the Dutch troops had allowed them to remain inside their compound. “The Dutch government is responsible for genocide,” said relative Kada Hotic. “One percent or 10%, it does not matter — they are responsible.” 3 SURROGATES CHARGED: Three Cambodian women have been charged with violating surrogacy and human trafficking laws after they gave birth to babies they delivered to Chinese nationals in Vietnam.
