Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement on the Note Verbale submitted to the German Foreign Ministry regarding war reparations and compensation from the First and Second World Wars (4 June 2019)

On the instructions of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Sia Anagnostopoulou, the Greek Ambassador to Berlin today submitted to the German Foreign Ministry a Note Verbale in which the Greek Government calls on the German side to enter into negotiations to resolve the pending issue of Greece’s claims against Germany for the payment of war reparations and compensation from the First and Second World Wars. This diplomatic move was made subsequent to the relevant debate on the level of Political Leaders at the Hellenic Parliament’s Plenary Session of 17 April, and in execution of the decision passed by a large majority, bearing in mind the Findings/Report of the Parliamentary Committee on pursuing payment of Germany’s debts to Greece.Greece’s claims concern compensation and reparations for damage suffered by Greece and its citizens during the First and Second World Wars, compensation for the victims of the German occupation and their descendants, repayment of the Occupation Loan, and return of looted and illegally removed archaeological and other cultural assets. The Greek government calls on the German government to enter into negotiations on the satisfaction of these claims, as a matter of great moral and material significance to the Greek people.
