Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Katrougalos on visit to Morocco (2-5 May 2018)

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Katrougalos represented Greece at the 5th Conference of the Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development, which was held today in Marrakesh, Morocco, with the participation of over thirty European and African countries. In his speech, Mr. Katrougalos stressed the solidarity shown by the Greek people, in conditions of extreme economic crisis, with the refugees and migrants. Greece firmly and actively supports the dialogue for a comprehensive approach to the migration crisis, as an issue that concerns both development and human rights. Migration, Mr. Katrougalos highlighted, is not a passing phenomenon, but is one of the components and manifestations of globalization. For this reason, it must be dealt with holistically, with emphasis on its root causes, the extreme inequalities between and within states, and absolute poverty, with an active front against xenophobia and racism. In this context, Greece supports regional cooperation and initiatives, like that of Rabat, as well as the significant effort of the UN to establish a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. Tomorrow, Mr. Katrougalos will be in Casablanca, heading the Greek business mission organized in cooperation with SEV and SEVE, and he will participate in the Greece-Morocco Business Forum.
