News of the day from around the world, Feb. 25

The U.N. human rights office said Friday that it is “deeply disturbed” by the “lenient” 18-month prison sentence handed down by a Tel Aviv military court against an Israeli soldier who killed a badly wounded Palestinian assailant as he lay on the ground after he had stabbed another soldier. Slovenia has introduced a law on same-sex partnership that grants legal rights to gay unions but does not allow them to adopt or undergo in-vitro fertilization. Same-sex unions now enjoy the same legal protection as married couples in areas including social and health care benefits.
