Greek Main Opposition Leader: ‘The Government Lied and Bankrupted the Country’

Greek main opposition leader Antonis Samaras strongly criticized Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in a brief televised address on Wednesday, blaming him for closing Greece’s banks. “He did not have the bravery to admit he is the one who signed to close the banks and he did not dare admit he submitted an austerity proposal, similar to the one of Greece’s creditors,” the New Democracy leader said. “The government lied to everyone and eventually bankrupted the country! We are left hanging while losing 35 billion euros in EU funds that were earmarked for our country after the people’s sacrifices!” Samaras added that Tsipras is now “begging for a new Memorandum, while for months he said he would not sign one.” Samaras noted that Greece finds itself today in the worst position of the last decades, without a European safety net, with closed banks, “while it is having trouble fulfilling its basic obligations toward its citizens.” He said the country has not been isolated from its partners and called on Greeks to vote “Yes” on Sunday’s referendum.
