ELSTAT: Road Accidents Increased in April 2015

Road accidents that occurred across Greece and lead to deaths or injuries increased by 7.2%, in April 2015, compared to the same period last year. Specifically, according to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), the number of accidents rose to 948 in April 2015 from 884 in April 2014. Meanwhile, 69 people were killed in road accidents, 78 people were seriously injured and 1,049 were slightly injured, compared to 55 deceased, 74 seriously injured and 1,015 slightly injured in April 2014. As a result, ELSTAT recorded an increase of 25.5% in the number of deaths, 5.4% in the number of severely injured and 3.3% for the slightly injured. In November 2014, Greece ranked first in traffic accident fatalities among European Union countries, according to a report by insurance company Allianz. The report also suggested that road accidents are the number one cause of death for young people, regardless of the country’s economic status.
