Greeks Demonstrate They Want to Stay in Eurozone

Under the slogan “We Stay in Europe”, about 5,000 people demonstrated on Thursday in favor of the euro currency and Greece’s stay in the European Union. The demonstration took place at Syntagma Square, in front of the Greek Parliament and the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. Some demonstrators entered the parliament courtyard and shouted slogans, asking the government to come to an agreement with creditors so that Greece stays in the Eurozone. Several New Democracy lawmakers joined the demonstrators: Adonis Georgiadis, Theodoros Fortsakis, Nikos Dendias, Vasilis Kikilias, Nikos Vroutsis, Costas Tasoulas and Giorgos Koumoutsakos reiterated the opposition party’s position that Greece belongs in Europe and the common currency bloc. The rally was organized by a Facebook group with the purpose to protest against the government’s strategy in negotiations that threatens to leave Greece bankrupt and out of the Eurozone. “Greece belongs to Europe! It’s time to unite our voices in favor of Greece remaining in the euro currency, in favor of staying within the European family. We choose a Europe of pluralism, a Europe of respect for human rights and progress. We are sending a strong message to the government. These are critical moments and we cannot be silent spectators,” was the statement of the group.
