SYRIZA: Greece to Pay Salaries and Pensions Over Debt

SYRIZA’s Central Committee and Parliamentary Group unanimously passed a resolution urging the Greek government not to submit to “memorandum-style” agreements. The resolution notes that the government has for four months refused “shameful ultimatums” but stressed that this does not mean that the government is not striving for a mutually beneficial solution and making every effort to find a way out of the deadlock. It also accuses the “austerity fanatics” of undermining the negotiating process by adopting intransigent positions and attempting the Greek economy’s “credit suffocation,” warning that those attempting to humiliate Greece are “playing with fire” and warning that payment of wages and pensions will take absolute priority over debt installments if the issue is forced. However, SYRIZA rejected its “Left Platform’s” two-page proposal asking the government not to pay the next IMF installment, or make any future payments to its creditors, if the same “extortion tactics” continue in the negotiations.
