Rehired Cleaners Celebrate With Greek Cabinet Members

The decision to rehire the finance ministry cleaners was celebrated today with several cabinet members and other state officials who joined the cleaners offering sweets and praising their struggle. There was a party on Monday morning on Karagiorgi Servias street next to the ministry of finance where the cleaners who had been laid off as redundant from the previous government had set a protest camp for a whole year. Deputy Finance Minister Nadia Valavani, Administrative Reform Minister Giorgos Katrougalos, Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis, Attica Region Prefect Rena Dourou and SYRIZA MP Dmitris Vitsas participated in the celebration shaking hands with cleaners and making statements to the Press. The music for the party was provided by government-friendly radio station In the Red that was broadcasting from Karagiorgi Servias. “What is happening here today will be a harbinger of what will happen tomorrow all across the country. With dignity and solidarity we are entering a new path,” Valavani said. The minister of administrative reforms said that, “The cleaners have won because they struggled. Nothing is gained without struggle… The answers the cleaners gave today do not pertain to civil servants only, they pertain to each and every employee of the public and private sector. They are answers about labor rights in the workplace, about stability in relations between employer and employee, they are against fear, and we are going back to a time when workers had rights.” The radio station announcer said that “we are broadcasting from a strategic point of the labor struggle that has crossed Greek borders.”
