Germany’s stance on war reparations to Greece is scandalous and does not fit in a just state, said German economist Rainer Thiem who took the initiative through the change.org web platform to collect signatures. In an open letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the German economist said that the issue has not been settled nor written-off and Germany needs to pay the debt so that both people are set free from the burdens of the past. In an interview to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, Thiem said he is in favor of the political and judicial claim of war reparations and supports the Greek government’s decision. He also described those who accused Greece of “blackmailing” its partners as “cynical” and “deceitful.” Regarding the economic crisis, he said that Greece serves as a guinea pig that will determine the type of Europe that will be handed over to the next generations. He noted that the political and economic elites in Germany and Europe are outraged against the Greeks who deposed the vested parties and voted for a leftist government. (source: ana-mpa)
