6 People Heavily Injured During Fire at Aspropyrgos Refineries

Six people were seriously injured, while two of them are in critical condition, when a fire broke out at the Hellenic Petroleum refinery tank in Aspropyrgos, Greece on Friday, May 8. The injured have been transferred to Thriasio and Attikon Hospital and the fire has been put out. In particular, three of the injured have been transferred to Thriasio Hospital, suffering from burns and the other three were transferred to Attikon Hospital. According to an official Ministry of Health statement one of the men is intubated and in critical condition while 70% of his body is covered in burns. The second patient bears partial thickness burns covering 20% of his body, and the third man in Thriasio Hospital is suffering from an inhalant burn and has been intubated. Furthermore, the three men who were transferred to Attikon University Hospital were severely injured, suffering from burns and experiencing respiratory distress. According to Greek news, the men were injured when an explosion occurred while maintenance work was underway in the tank. The refinery workers complained that they did not hear an alarm so they were not able to leave the premises in time. In an official announcement Hellenic Petroleum stressed that the maintenance work was performed by experienced professionals. The fire was put out by the refinery staff, while three fire department vehicles arrived at the scene to cool the tank.
