Illegal Migrants and Refugees Camp in Downtown Athens

Omonoia Square and surrounding streets in downtown Athens, Greece, turned into a camp for refugees and illegal migrants as hundreds were transferred in the capital from the islands where they landed. A large number of them are refugees from war-torn Syria. The Greek government will give all proper documents to them so they can go to the country of their choice in Europe. It is uncertain what will become of the migrants who don’t have refugee status. Meanwhile, dozens of them were waiting at bus stops in order to visit the immigration services and get documentation. On Wednesday morning alone, the Greek Coast Guard arrested a total of 350 illegal migrants on islands of the eastern Aegean Sea. The Greek government decided on Tuesday evening to provide Syrian refugees with travel documents. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and pertinent Ministers also decided to develop settlement camps in order to accommodate illegal migrants with the necessary health and safety standards.
