EU’s Katainen: ‘We can Work Closely and Help Greek People Find Jobs’

European Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen said on Friday he was very satisfied with his visit to Athens and that he was certain the Commission can work closely with Greece to create more jobs. “I learned a lot during my visit and I’m sure we can work very closely (with the Greek government) and help Greek people find new jobs,” Katainen said after his meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at Maximos Mansion, adding he was pleased with his visit. He pointed out three elements which could help the Greek economy. The first is that as soon as a new risk fund is set up, it could loan money to small and medium-sized businesses in Greece. The second, addressed to the private sector, is that businesses can communicate independently, privately and directly with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and establish cooperative relationships without the intervention of the public sector. Thirdly, Katainen said he told the prime minister and his ministers that it would make sense to use public–private partnership (PPP) in investments related to energy or investments which have a social character.
