German Govt Spokesman: No Feud Between Germany and Greece

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert rejected the talk about a personal dispute between Greece and Germany, noting that Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s goal is to keep Greece in the Eurozone. He pointed out that the responsibility for finding a solution to the Greek problem belongs to the Eurozone as a whole, adding that Merkel will be able to continue to defend her political goal for as long as Greece implements the reforms. He said that there is no “personal feud” or bilateral issue between Berlin and Athens and, commenting on an opinion poll showing that the German public is negative toward Greece, he said that Merkel and Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble work to reinforce the Eurozone and preserve its cohesion. “Our goal is to keep Greece in the Eurozone,” he said, adding that Merkel always explains this to the people and if Greece implements the reforms then this goal will continue to be explainable. Responding to a question on the current state of Greek-German relations, Seibert said that bilateral relations are not limited to Greece’s exit from the crisis, noting that Germany wants to be Greece’s close friend and partner, and this is proven by what it offers.
