Greek Finance Minister Yianis Voaroufakis has turned into a symbol of hope for many austerity-stricken Greeks and other Europeans that have seen their quality of life degrading as a result of EU’s austerity-driven policies. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was recently elected on the premise to bring back the “lost dignity of Greece” as well as change course to the austerity-driven Greek economy. Tsipras saw in Varoufakis the man who can accomplish the task as Greece’s Finance Minister. After Varoufakis started his first round of meetings with other EU ministers and high-ranking officials trying to implement SYRIZA’s plan to ease Greece from a huge debt, the internet found its favorite person of the week. The blogger and university professor turned Finance Minister who dresses nothing like his predecessors and is not afraid to stand up to Europe’s austerity forces inspired a lot of social media users.
