Greek PM and German Chancellor; Possible Informal Meeting

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has no scheduled meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the European Union summit on Thursday. The two leaders may have an informal one, the Greek government spokesperson said. Speaking to Mega television on Thursday, Gavriil Sakellaridis said that, “There is no arranged meeting, but it is possible they could meet informally.” The two leaders will participate in the summit to discuss the crisis in the Ukraine. Greece has failed to come to an agreement on the debt issue with its international creditors at Wednesday’s emergency meeting between euro zone finance ministers. Germany holds the hardest stance against the new Greek government proposals to renegotiate state debt and exit the current bailout program. A scheduled Eurogroup will take place on Monday, February 16 and the Greek side is optimistic that a solution will be found. “I am optimistic that there will be an agreement towards which the Greek government is putting a great effort,” Sakellaridis said.
