German FinMin Schaeuble: I Feel Sorry for the Greeks, They Elected an Irresponsible Govt

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble directly accused the Greek government for acting “irresponsibly” in terms of the ongoing negotiations with its European partners, just a few hours ahead of the critical Eurogroup meeting to be held today in Brussels. As he characteristically said in an interview to German radio ahead of his departure to Brussels, he “feels sorry for the Greek people,” because “they have elected a government that is behaving rather irresponsibly at the moment.” Schaeuble’s comments came only a few hours before the Eurozone’s Finance Ministers meeting and are seen as an answer to Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis‘ article published in The New York Times, in which he stressed that Athens “shall desist, whatever the consequences, from deals that are wrong for Greece and wrong for Europe.” As Varoufakis explained, “the ‘extend and pretend’ game that began after Greece’s public debt became unserviceable in 2010 will end.” At the same time, Greek stocks and bonds recorded yet another fall today as the country is facing profound differences with its international loan partners, which will test the mettle of the newly elected leftist government that has promised the abolition of unpopular austerity measures taken by the previous government in accordance with the country’s loan partners.
