European Commission: ‘Low Expectations for a Final Agreement at the Eurogroup’

There are low expectations that any final agreement will be reached at the Eurogroup on Wednesday, European Commission spokeswoman Mina Andreeva said on Tuesday. “We have low expectations that any final agreement will be reached tomorrow or at the European Council,” she said. However, she underlined that the Commission is working so that an agreement is reached, suggesting that this may be feasible by the next Eurogroup on February 16. European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker is in very intense contacts with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the rest of the Eurozone but up to this point these contacts have not been very fruitful, she added. According to European Commission sources, in order to have an agreement by the February 16 Eurogroup, all sides need to move from their initial positions. Tsipras-Juncker phone conversation held ‘in good climate’ The telephone conversation between Tsipras and Juncker on Tuesday was held in “a good climate and in a spirit of cooperation,” the head of the Commission’s delegation in Greece, Panos Karvounis, told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. The phone call took place a day before the Eurogroup meeting in Brussels and following a request by Athens. (source: ana-mpa)
