Bulgaria and Romania ask for greater NATO presence in the region

by  NEOnline | GK Bulgaria and Romania want a more dynamic NATO presence in the region, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said today. Iohannis met with Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev today in Bucharest. “There is a very good tie between Bulgaria and Romania,” said Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said speaking at a press conference and added that the two sides plan to further strengthen their relations “through transport, education and other projects.” The two politicians discussed about energy security and the strengthening of the regional security. "We want an increased NATO presence...so NATO members can strengthen the reaction of the alliance,” Romanian said. Regarding energy Plevneliev said a gas interconnector between Bulgaria and Greece would be launched in 2018, financed by the European Commission. Energy Yesterday, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov also had formal consultations with Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu. Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov said that the gas interconnection between Romania and Bulgaria is very important for the energy security of Europe, from north to south, while Aurescu pleaded also for the Romania-Bulgaria-Greece corridor. “Southeast Europe is very dependent on gas supplies from Russia and due to the proximity of Ukraine this problem is increasingly obvious. These countries (in Southeast Europe) have a huge potential to diversify the gas sources and to create a European energy market to provide gas for all EU citizens is a task that should not be delayed. In this respect, building the systems of interconnection between Bulgaria and Romania is very important for the energy security architecture in Europe, from north to south,” Mitov said on Thursday while in Bucharest, Mediafax reports.
