10 Unique Greek Experiences

Lonely Planet, one of the world’s leading travel guides, posted a list of the experiences that every tourist must have when visiting Greece for the first time. The article entitled “First time Greece: top 10 experiences” presents the country’s beauties and attempts to answer a major question: “How to approach this vast country with enough islands to suit everyone’s taste and antiquities dotting the landscape like a historical map of Western civilization?” Greece offers a variety of archaeological sites, cultural events and experiences that every tourist must experience before heading back home. Ancient Athens A visit to the Acropolis is an “absolute must,” noted Lonely Planet, and then a walk through the modern Acropolis Museum that hosts a variety of statues and ancient Greek artifacts pointing out their history and cultural significance. Furthermore, a visit to the Acropolis can be followed by a walk through the Ancient Agora, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Panathenaic Stadium. Monastiraki and Plaka The walk through ancient Athens could lead to Monastiraki flea market and Plaka. Monastiraki offers a variety of shops selling everything from souvenirs, to antiques, jewelry and leather goods. Plaka is a place full of picturesque taverns and cafés. Coffee culture “When in Greece, do what the Greeks do and have a long, lazy, lingering and chat-filled kafedaki,” noted the article. In Greece, people spend hours enjoying their coffee and the company of their friends or family in the small cafés scattered across the city. Santorini (Thira) The gorgeous island of Santorini “lives up to the postcard-perfect photos” that can be found on the internet or hang on people’s fridges. Santorini is always packed with tourists during the high season but during the rest of the year the island is a perfect, peaceful paradise. Mykonos and Delos Mykonos, the party island, situated in the Aegean is known across the globe for its high-profile tourism and day-and-night parties. However, Delos, a smaller island off the coast of Mykonos, is more peaceful and hosts one of Greece’s most treasured archaeological sites. Island hopping in the Cyclades The Cyclades is a Greek island group in the Aegean that “draws visitors from far and wide every year.” Lonely Planet proposed island hopping in order to visit more than one wonderful destination. Hydra The Greek island of Hydra -located just a short distance from the Greek capital- is a small picturesque island where tourists have the opportunity to relax and enjoy a few days away from the city routine. Festivals Festivals in Greece are organized throughout the year. Carnivals, music festivals, glendia, theater festivals in ancient Greek theaters are all part of the Hellenic culture. The long lunch “You haven’t lived the Greek life, and certainly not had a full summer experience, until you’ve partaken in the ‘long lunch’,” preferably by the seaside, according to Lonely Planet. Beaches From Santorini to Mykonos, and Athens to Corfu, Greece is decorated with beautiful beaches. “Greece is a land for beach connoisseurs – sample broadly, and form your own opinions.”
