More than 15 Million Passengers Used Athens’ Airport in 2014

The number of foreign citizens who visited Athens exclusively increased by a total of 31% in 2014, compared to the previous year, according to passenger traffic data released by the Athens International Airport (AIA) “Eleftherios Venizelos.” A total of 15.2 million passengers traveled through AIA, putting the Greek capital back on the international tourist map. In 2013, 12.5 million passengers used the airport. According to the same data, passenger traffic totaled an impressive 1.06 million passengers just in December 2014, exceeding the one million barrier after five years, while a similar number was recorded in November as well. Domestic passenger arrivals also continued their impressive growth by 40%, while passengers from abroad increased steadily by 20.6%. Specifically for December, Greek travelers using AIA significantly increased by 23%, while during the same month, domestic travel signaled an impressive growth of 45%. Foreign visitors exclusively for Athens also recorded a particularly impressive increase of 36%, a development that reflects the attractiveness of Athens as a new “hot” winter destination. In total, for 2014, passenger traffic in AIA recorded an important increase of 21.2%, reaching 15.2 million visitors. Both domestic and foreign passengers showed similar growth levels of 22.5% and 20.5% respectively.
