Greek Deputy PM Venizelos Labels PM Samaras ‘Immoral’ Due to MP’s Transfer

With a letter to the Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, the president of PASOK, Evangelos Venizelos expressed his disapproval over the transfer of PASOK’s MP in Corfu, Angela Gerekou to New Democracy. Venizelos wrote in his letter that he never thought that New Democracy would stoop to such a “crude and immoral” political act. “It’s a shame,” he wrote. PASOK’s spokeswoman, Eva Kaili noted that this is a political ethics issue, not just personal. “It’s a moral issue that will be judged accordingly by the people.” Angela Gkerekou confirmed on Thursday January 8 that she would be part of the New Democracy political party in the upcoming elections, in the region of Corfu. “I decided to accept Antonis Samaras’ invitation to enlist with New Democracy” she stated in her announcement. The Greek newspaper “Ta Nea” reported that Greek Defense Minister and New Democracy MP in Corfu, Nikos Dendias, played a major role in the decision since in the upcoming elections he will be nominated in the Second Athens Electoral District. Meanwhile, there is speculation among Greek politicians that Antonis Samaras was the one who urged George Papandreou to create his own party, the “Democrat Socialist’s Movement,” in order to break PASOK and win in the upcoming elections. Until recently, there were rumors that Angela Gerekou would be transferring to Papandreou’s party.
