Cretan Soccer Team Receives Six-Point Deduction After FIFA Demand

On Friday morning, January 16, 2015, Greek football club OFI received a six-point deduction penalty by Superleague, following a request for disciplinary action by football’s world governing body, FIFA. The penalty request came on Thursday and was implemented in just one day due to a complaint made by 22-year-old Serbian footballer Aleksandar Pesic who is currently playing for Toulouse. His complaint was in regards to delayed salary payments. OFI has not yet made an announcement on whether they will accept the decision or attempt to overturn it. However, after the point deduction, the team’s overall score is at 14 points in a total of 18 games, ranking the club in 16th place, below Panionios and above Ergotelis and Niki Volos who come last in 17th and 18th place respectively. Italian World Cup winner Gattuso resigned as coach for the second time in 10 weeks on January 1, citing the club’s ongoing financial and boardroom issues. OFI, or Omilos Filathlon Irakleiou, is a Greek football club based in Heraklion, Crete.
