Phelps puts swimming on hold after DUI arrest, attending program 'to better understand myself'

by  Associated Press Phelps says swimming on hold after DUI arrest by PAUL NEWBERRY, Associated Press - 5 October 2014 12:25-04:00 Putting his swimming career on hold after his second DUI arrest, Olympic champion Michael Phelps began a six-week program Sunday that he said "will provide the help I need to better understand myself." The winningest athlete in Olympic history made the announcement in a series of posts on his Twitter account. According to his representatives at Octagon, Phelps entered an in-patient program that will keep him from competing at least through mid-November, though there's no indication he plans to give up swimming. "The past few days have been extremely difficult," Phelps said in a statement. "I recognize that this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself. I'm going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself. He added, "Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future." The 29-year-old Phelps was arrested early Tuesday and charged with drunken driving. Police said he failed a series of field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.14 percent, well above the legal limit of 0.08. Phelps retired after the 2012 Olympics in London, having won a record 18 gold medals and 22 medals overall. But he returned to competition this year with the goal of making the 2016 Rio Games. His comeback has produced encouraging results, including three golds and two silvers at the Pac Pacific Championships in August. Now, swimming is on hold. A statement from Octagon said Phelps was entering "a comprehensive program that will help him focus on all of his life experiences and identify areas of need for long-term personal growth and development." "Michael takes this matter seriously and intends to share his learning experiences with others in the future," the statement said. While Phelps was still working out his schedule for the upcoming year, he will surely miss the first U.S. Grand Prix meet at Minneapolis, which begins Nov. 20. The remaining five Grand Prix meets are all in the first half of 2015 — important steps in the lead-up to next summer's world championships in Russia. Phelps has already qualified for the worlds, the most important meet on the swimming calendar outside of the Olympics. He was not planning to compete in the short course world championships, which will be held in early December in Qatar. The U.S. team for that meet, which includes longtime Phelps rival Ryan Lochte, was announced last week. Phelps was also charged with excessive speed and crossing double lane lines in the Fort McHenry Tunnel on Interstate 95 in his native Baltimore, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority Police. An officer reported that Phelps was clocked going 84 mph in a 45-mph zone. His trial is scheduled for Nov. 19. The statement of probable cause said Phelps' eyes were red, bloodshot, and "his speech was mush mouth." When asked to do a one-leg stand, Phelps replied, "That's not happening," according to the statement. Phelps was previously charged with drunken driving as a 19-year-old, fresh off his second Olympic games in Greece, where he won six gold medals. He pleaded guilty to the charges, but as a young first-time offender he was able to avoid conviction. He was granted probation before judgment and sentenced to 18 months on probation and a fine. If convicted of the latest charges, Phelps faces up to a year in jail, a $1,000 fine and the loss of his driver's license for six months. However, legal experts said it's unlikely the swimmer would have to serve any jail time. ___ Follow Paul Newberry on Twitter at www.twitter.com/pnewberry1963 News Topics: Sports, Driving under the influence, Men's sports, Celebrity legal affairs, Swimming, Celebrity, Men's swimming, Summer Olympic games, Crime, Arrests, Reckless endangerment, General news, Entertainment, Arts and entertainment, Aquatics, Men's aquatics, Olympic games, Events, Law and order People, Places and Companies: Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. One in Three Greeks Indebted

The two adjustments for debt repayment to the Greek state have brought minimum proceeds since, according to the General Secretariat of Public Revenue, one in three Greeks owes money to the state. The new debts from January 1, 2013, until the end of August 2014 reached 15,884 billion euros. The number of citizens who can settle their debts is small, with the total amount of debts settled and repaid until August 2014 reaching 982.5 million euros. Figures from the General Secretariat of Public Revenue show that approximately 2.2 million citizens, out of 2.45 million, owe up to 5,000 euros, while approximately 50 tax payers owe the Greek state over 1.5 million euros. Meanwhile, figures from Greece’s Ministry of Finance show that in the July – September 2014 period, 24,079 audits in businesses were carried out. The Greek investigating authorities found a total of 8,309 offenses in 3,393 businesses, the majority of which are related to non-issuance of invoices.

19-Year-Old Greek Wins Parkour Competition in Santorini

19-year-old Dimitris Kyrsanidis, a professional parkour athlete from Thessaloniki, Greece, was the winner of the fourth “Red Bull Art of Motion” held in the Greek island of Santorini on October 4. Kyrsanidis impressed both audience and judges with his climbs and bold leaps, winning the title. The picturesque island of Santorini, with its volcanic rocks, deep blue sea and white houses, hosted the “Red Bull Art of Motion” for the fourth consecutive year. Eighteen athletes competed in the parkour competition held in the world’s best natural racetrack. A total of 55 freerunners from across the world came to Santorini to compete in the preliminary phase held the previous days, in a stunning scenery, in front of the island’s caldera. Having the Cycladic island’s architecture as a backdrop, the athletes offered a spectacular show to the audience. “Red Bull Art of Motion” was launched in Vienna in 2007 and is considered the leading freerunning event with more than 10 competitions in different countries during the last few years. In 2011, Santorini was chosen as the top destination for freerunning and since then the competition takes place in Firostefani, with Latvian Pavel Petkuns coming first for two consecutive years. The athletes’ main objective is to cover the distance from the starting to the ending point, avoiding obstacles in the most efficient way possible.

Cypriot Teachers Have the Biggest Spending Power in Europe

A European Commission report released on Saturday, showed that teachers in Cyprus have more spending power than their European colleagues despite an 8.5% reduction to their salaries due to the economic crisis. The report entitled “Teachers’ and Schoolheads’ Salaries and Allowances in Europe” showed that the statutory salary for teachers who start working in primary and lower secondary education is lower than the national per capita GDP in about three-quarters of the 33 countries surveyed. The survey concerned teachers and school heads in preschool, primary, lower secondary and upper secondary education for the period 2013 and 2014. In Cyprus, wages of senior teachers for all levels of education amount to 306% of per capita GDP. The statutory salary for Cypriot teachers reaches €39,837 for preschool education, €39,297 for primary and €40,077 for secondary education. Schoolheads in Cyprus receive an average €60,267 in primary and €70,695 in secondary education. Despite the fact that in 2013 and 2014 teachers’ salaries increased in the majority of European countries, their spending power in most cases remained below 2009 levels. During 2013-2014 teachers’ salaries increased in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, France, Croatia, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Austria, Slovakia, Finland, Great Britain, Norway, FYROM and Turkey. Teachers in Cyprus, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Romania, Sweden, Britain, FYROM and Liechtenstein do not receive any remuneration for overtime work. Moreover, Cypriot teachers do not receive any allowances since January 2013 due to the economic crisis. The report showed that Greece has suffered the largest decrease in teachers’ spending power, reaching 40%.

Juventus v Roma: Serie A live!

Latest updates from the match at Juventus StadiumEmail lawrence.ostlere.casual@theguardian.comKeep up with all todays live scores hereCheck in on West Ham v QPR 4.55pm BST Our very own Paolo Baldini is in the BT Sport studio discussing the buildup to this game, wearing a spectacular shirt that I would describe as a shade of electrically charged lemon curd. Here at Guardian Towers hes getting some stick. 4.52pm BST Almost-fact attack: Just noticed that if Ashley Cole had started in place of Holebas, as some were expecting, Roma would have had 11 different nationalities in their starting 11. Now the two Greeks make it just 10, emails Giovanni Pisoni. And a completely unrelated fact: the rivarly between these two teams is certainly one of the most vicious in Italy, particularly on the Roma side as their supporters (not entirely without reason one might add) are constantly accusing the bianconeri of getting favourable refereeing decisions. This is the episode that started it, the famous Maurizio Turone goal: third last match of the 1980-81 serie A, Juve leading Roma by a single point, (probably) wrongly disallowed goal, match ends 0-0, Juve clinch the title two weeks later. 4.41pm BST Louis van Gaal could take a thing or two from this Juve team. Stephan Lichtsteiner and Kwadwo Asamoah are excellent wingbacks, with strength and stamina and good delivery and all those things you need. Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard, less so. 4.37pm BST So Andrea Pirlo recovers in time for the biggest game of the season and Massimiliano Allegri (thats the last time he gets full named today) elects to put him straight into the Juve midfield alongside Paul Pogba and Claudio Marchisio. Kwadwo Asamoah is preferred to Patrice Eva in the left wingback position. The surprise in Romas side is to see Ashley Cole left out for Jose Cholevas. Daniele De Rossi is one of several players unavailable to Rudi Garcia through injury. 4.20pm BST Juventus: Buffon; Caceres, Bonucci, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Pogba, Pirlo, Marchisio, Asamoah; Tevez, Llorente. Subs: Storari, Rubinho, Ogbonna, Evra, Vidal, Pepe, Padoin, Pereyra, Mattiello, Coman, Giovinco, Morata. Roma: Skorupski; Maicon, Manolas, Yanga-Mbiwa, Cholevas; Pjanic, Keita, Nainggolan; Iturbe, Totti, Gervinho. Subs: Lobont, Marchegiani, Somma, Torosidis, Cole, Emanuelson, Paredes, Uçan, Florenzi, Ljajic, Sanabria, Destro. 4.17pm BST Team news is filtering in and the best beard in football, Andrea Pirlo, is straight into the side to make his first appearance of the season. Full line-ups coming up...Andrea Pirlo returns from injury and will start against Roma while Vidal will be on the bench 4.08pm BST This one is set up beautifully. Both Juventus and Roma have made a perfect start to the season five wins from five games and their very own duel is forming at the top of Serie A. My book of cliches is out with somethings got to give, looking to draw first blood and six pointer at the ready. But, entertainment fans, should we be worried? They have conceded only one Serie A goal between them so far, suggesting we are in for an arms-length joust rather than an end-to-end slugfest. Continue reading...

The two were observed by a guard preparing to scale the wall and were warned against it. They ignored the warnings, police say. Police said they have been detained and will appear before an examining magistrate. The Acropolis, set on a rocky hill above Athens, is considered one of Europe's top cultural monuments. Italian League: Astonishing Winning Goal by Panagiotis Tachtsidis

The Greek packed squad of Hellas Verona sinked Cagliari even further down the Campionato table thanks to Panagiotis Tachtsidis’ screamer in the last two minutes of the game for a 1-0 victory over the Rossoblu. The Greek midfielder met the ball a few yards outside the box and with a powerful knock took the lead and subsequently the three points for the northeastern Italian club, lifting them to fourth place in the Serie A, leveled with Sampdoria and four points behind the top ranking Roma and Juventus, all of whom play tomorrow. Vaggelis Moras and Panagiotis Tachtsidis stayed on the pitch for the entire duration of the game, while the third Greek Gialoblu, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos, got no playing time. The Campionato will continue tomorrow with the clash between the two solely victorious teams of the league, AS Roma and Juventus, at the Juventus Stadium in Turin. AS Roma’s Greeks – Kostas Manolas, Vasilios Torosidis, Jose Holebas – are all in good form and expected to get some playing time.

Sport halted in Greece after soccer fan's death despite tougher laws to fight stadium violence

by  Associated Press Sport halted as Greece mourns fan's death by DEREK GATOPOULOS, Associated Press - 5 October 2014 02:08-04:00 PIRAEUS, Greece (AP) — There are no football matches being played in Greece this weekend. Basketball, swimming, handball and volleyball events have also been halted by government order. The country is mourning the death of Costas Katsoulis, a 46-year-old fan of third-division football club Ethnikos, who was beaten and fatally injured at a Sept. 14 game against local team Irodotos on Crete. His death restarted a debate on violence, and widely perceived corruption in professional Greek sport. Witnesses to the Crete attack said a small group of youths used brass knuckles and motorcycle gloves to inflict Katsoulis' severe head injuries. He died at a military hospital in Athens on Monday. Three men have been jailed awaiting trial for murder, while a fourth suspect arrested after the attack was released from custody. "The death of Costas Katsoulis should be the last in the long list of victims of the actions of criminals, psychopaths and the mindless people," said Yiannis Andrianos, a deputy minister for sport, who intervened to have Katsoulis flown to Athens for treatment. "These people even introduce violence to third-division football, handball games, women's volleyball matches, and even events involving children's teams." Over the past decade, Greece has brought in tough anti-hooliganism laws, introducing mandatory jail time and lengthy match bans for offenders convicted for stadium violence, as well as restrictions on traveling fans. But domestic football continues to operate in a toxic atmosphere. Major clubs still publicly accuse each other of rigging matches, team security staff are often implicated in fan violence, and supporters' clubs are frequently targeted in arson attacks. Maintaining security is complicated by the fact that major clubs have teams in multiple sports — allowing rival fans to pick low-policed events for prearranged clashes — while club bosses are often leading businessmen with competing interests. This week, police said a far-left Greek militant group was planning to assassinate the chairman of the country's largest football club, Olympiakos, along with other prominent industrialists. Greece's Football Association this season turned to an outsider, former Scottish referee Hugh Dallas, to oversee the appointments of Greek match officials. But critics of the government and sporting authorities say bolder changes are needed to clean up the sport. "We agree that respect should be shown for the fan who was killed, but suspending the leagues alone will not solve the problem," Julio Synadinos, of the Department of Sport and Physical Education at the left-wing opposition Syriza party, told The Associated Press. "Our first priority would be to investigate the financial and other relationships major clubs have with groups of organized supporters — that is the umbilical cord of this problem." Syriza, which is mounting a strong challenge to the conservative coalition government, also backs education reforms that would teach children about the principles of competitive sport. "Unfortunately in Greece, the prevailing attitude that starts from a young age is that supporters of a different team are seen as enemies," Synadinos said. "We need preventive measures: To tell kids what sport really is about." Katsoulis was buried this week at his Cretan hometown of Platanias. Club fans and officials gathered at a church near Athens on Saturday to attend a memorial service. ___ AP writer Costas Kantouris in Thessaloniki contributed. ___ Follow Gatopoulos at http://www.twitter.com/dgatopoulos and Kantouris at http://www.twitter.com/CostasKantouris News Topics: Sports, Violence in sports, Women's sports, Women's volleyball, Violence, Volleyball, Volleyball games, War and unrest, Crime, Social issues, Social affairs, General news People, Places and Companies: Greece, Athens, Crete, Western Europe, Europe Copyright 2014 The Associated Press.
