More Than 500 Migrants Found in the Aegean in 48 Hours

Greek Coast Guard is making efforts to collect migrants from various areas of the eastern Aegean sea over the last 48 hours. Senior Coast Guard officers reported that the wave of immigration from Asia Minor has and will continue to grow due to the tense situation in Gaza, Iraq, Syria and Libya. Human traffickers receive large amounts of money in order to fill their old boats with men, women and children, and help them enter Europe through Greece, to hopefully find a better life. Just in the last 48 hours, 553 illegal migrants were found in various areas of the eastern Greek sea borders, while six human traffickers were arrested. 114 illegal migrants were found and rescued in Chios, while the smuggler was arrested. 72 were found in Farmakonisi, 62 in Rhodes as well as a smuggler, 41 in Samos, 27 in Samothrace, 5 in Kos, 104 in Simi as well as four traffickers, 69 in Agios Efstratios and 59 in Mytilene. The Deputy General Director of the International Organization for Migration, Laura Thompson, held a meeting recently with Greek Shipping Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on the issue of the ever increasing migration through Greek sea borders. The Minister agreed to hold further meetings between the two sides in order to improve the reception of migration flow, based on the international standards of respect for human rights and the establishment of an informational meeting between the organization and Greek Coast Guard officers who serve in areas where illegal migration is a common phenomenon.

Public Sector Employees Don’t Know How to Use Computers

According to data released by Greek newspaper “Ta Nea”, public sector employees are computer illiterate. In fact, more than half (64%) admitted that they don’t know how to send emails, so they prefer to deal with handwritten documents. Furthermore, only 25% of public servants can speak English, while a mere 5.3% speak French and 3.3% German. After the data was released, Greek Minister of Administrative Reform and E-Governance Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that these numbers are not satisfying and that the “profile” of Greek public sector employees does not meet the needs of the people or the sector. Mitsotakis is planning to reform the public sector and make it more efficient.

The eurozone needs an alternative solution to its economic woes

ECB head Mario Draghi is calling for more growth-friendly policies, but a little quantitative easing won't do the jobIn France it was 2006. In Ireland and Spain it was 2003. In Greece it was 2001. In Portugal and Cyprus it was 2000. In Italy it was 1997. That's how far back you have to go to find a year when living standards peaked for these countries.Note that the worst performance has not been in a country bailed out since the eurozone debt crisis but in Italy, now in the final stages of not one but two lost decades. The Deadliest Femmes Fatales of Ancient Greek Mythology

Ancient Greek mythology is filled with references to strong men who conquered kingdoms, fought for their freedom and did not hesitate to kill. However, there are many strong and powerful women who became known for their ruthlessness and canning ways. In memory of Lauren Bacall who used to play strong, powerful characters, creating some of Hollywood’s most ruthless, but at the same time desirable women, here is a list of the deadliest and most powerful women of ancient Greek mythology. Clytemnestra She was every man’s worst nightmare. According to the legend, Clytemnestra was the wife of Agamemnon, king of Mycenae, who sailed to Troy as commander of the Greek army to help his brother Menelaus take back his wife Helen who had been abducted by Paris of Troy. Before leaving Greece, Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia to goddess Artemis, to appease his wrath. While Agamemnon was fighting the Trojan War, Clytemnestra started plotting his murder with her new lover, Aegisthus. Upon the king’s return, the two lovers ambushed him and slit his throat. Chocking on his own blood, the king called Clytemnestra a name that can only be translated as “bitch-face.” Even though she has been portrayed as a villain in numerous ancient Greek tragedies, no one could blame her for avenging her daughter’s death. Artemisia I of Caria Artemisia, Queen of Halicarnassus, may not have been on the right side of history, but even the Athenian fighters who sailed against her, showed a lot of respect. She fought in the Battle of Salamis for her overlord Xerxes as one of his closest naval advisors. Even though she was opposed to the attack, she fought bravely and refused to back down. With her smart and canning ways, she fought through the Greek ships fearlessly, while the other Persian admirals dissolved into hysteria. Penthesilea Penthesilea was the queen of Amazons. She went almost suicidally mad after she caused the death of her sister during a hunting accident. Driven by demons haunting her, she decided to go on a suicide mission to fight in the Trojan war. Eventually she got her wish but not before killing her way through the Greek troops and heroes. She even held her own in a fight against Telamonian Ajax. She was eventually defeated by the Greek demigod Achilles. Medea Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Medea was the wife of Jason who, like many ancient Greek husbands, was sleeping around. He had many mistresses but when he decided to marry one of them, he stepped over the line. In order to take her revenge, heartbroken Medea who was in love with her husband, murdered the children that she and Jason had together. Circe According to ancient Greek legends, Circe, a goddess of magic, was the most well-known femme fatale of that era. She would seduce men, luring them on her island. When the men, driven by their desire to touch her, visited the island, she would catch them off guard and use a spell to transform them into hogs, trapping them forever. The only man who was ever able to escape her magic was Odysseus, who had been forewarned by the ancient Greek god Hermes.

Greek Police Fear Bank Robbery in Distomo May Be Terrorist-Related

Investigators of the Counter-terrorism unit of the Greek police fear a new terrorist attack after the bank robbery on August 22 in Distomo. According to police sources, the three armed robbers escaped with 300,000 euros from the National Bank of Greece branch, holding hostage one of the bank tellers. Police suspect that the robbers were members of Nikos Maziotis’ terrorist group Revolutionary Struggle, however the possibility that they are common criminals is not entirely ruled out. In fact, police are considering the involvement of known Greek criminal Vasilis Paleokostas who escaped from prison a few years ago. Authorities believe that after the bank robbery in Distomo, it is possible that the terrorist group is preparing a grand-scale, symbolic terrorist attack. Greek authprities are trying to piece together the puzzle in order to find evidence on the whereabouts of Paula Roupa, as well as other members of Nikos Maziotis’ group. The investigation is focused in the area of Peloponnese since the criminals escaped by boat and reached the coast of Corinth.

Renowned Lexicographer and Philologist Emmanuel Kriaras Dies at 107

Renowned lexicographer and philologist Emmanuel Kriaras died of a heart-attack on Friday at his home in Thessaloniki, Greece. At 107 years old, Kriaras, was one of Greece’s most distinguished elders. Kriaras was a professor emeritus at the School of Philosophy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and had published countless academic works. Among them is the 16-volume “Lexicon of Medieval Greek Demotic Literature 1100-1669,” and the “Greek Dictionary of the Modern Greek Language, Written and Oral,” that came out in 1995 and has been described as “the most authoritative modern Greek monolingual dictionary.” In an interview with ANA-MPA on the occasion of his 107th birthday, the internationally renowned scholar remarked, “I am well aware that most – especially some of the newly minted of the media – who come to see me do so not because they know and appreciate my work and my personality. They are mostly impressed by my age. I have never wanted to live so long… It just happened. I do not want to live any longer. My joy (my beloved wife) has gone. Love, which inspired me – love for life and creation – is no longer there. So, thank you for the greetings and gifts, but they are now redundant. And in our era there is no room for redundancies.” Kriaras was born in Piraeus when Greece was still on the Julian calendar (November 15); by the Gregorian calendar currently in use, he was born on November 28, 1906. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday in Thessaloniki and his burial will be in Chania, Crete on Wednesday, according to his wish. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras called the late philologist “an emblematic personality of the scientific and public life of the country who offered his service to Greece’s cultural life.” “Emmanuel Kriaras marked with his presence and actions two generations of political and intellectual struggles, teaching ethos and respect to the values of humanity,” Mr. Samaras stressed. In 2006, in recognition of his work and to mark his 100th birthday, Emmanuel Kriaras was awarded the “Golden Aristotle” by the University of Thessaloniki.
