Two Dead Due to Extreme Weather in Northern Greece

On Thursday morning, December 11, Greek rescuers were able to locate the body of a man at the bed of Gallikos River in Thessaloniki, northern Greece. The search for the unlucky man started on Wednesday afternoon by the Greek Police and the fire department in the area of Nea Philadelphia. His body was recovered from the river bed in an area were the river had overflowed and covered the road that runs next to it. The body was later transported to the morgue for an autopsy. However, the tragedy did not end there. A few hours later, another man was found dead in Aspro village, near the town of Kilkis. The Greek man who had been driving a taxi with FYROM license plates was swept away by the water while he was still inside the vehicle. Meanwhile, his passenger from Skopje managed to get out of the taxi and was able to alert the authorities. Several villages in Orestiada, Didymoteicho, Soufli and Feres have been declared in a state of emergency by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, after the request of the Coordinating Body for Civil Protection at the Evros Regional Unity. According to local authorities, at least 20,000 acres have flooded, due to dike breakage. Turkish authorities in Kastanies are also taking emergency measures on a daily basis, since several customs offices are closed throughout the day due to flooding, thus preventing vehicles from crossing the border.
