Thorough Tax Screenings for Greeks Living Abroad

Thousands of Greeks who have migrated abroad have been called to submit documents to local tax authorities in order to prove that they are living abroad permanently and avoid taxation as Greek citizens. The General Secretariat of Public Revenue issued a notice with instructions on the documentation that should be submitted by Greeks living abroad. In fact, if someone neglects to make the necessary actions, that person will be taxed as a Greek citizen with increased taxation. According to the notice, the screened taxpayers should submit evidence that they and their families are living permanently abroad and a residence certificate issued by the foreign tax authority that clarifies that the person is a tax resident of another state. Furthermore, they should also procure evidence about their work situation, such as a work contract with a foreign employer or a certificate of employment. In case none of these documents are available, Greeks who are living abroad should provide additional documentation, such as insurance documents or asset evidence.
