Syrian Refugees Removed from Syntagma Square

The Syrian refugees who had camped in across the Greek Parliament at Syntagma Square in protest, were removed from the spot in a joint effort between the Municipality of Athens and the Greek Police. The refugees had been at the Syntagma Square across the Greek Parliament since November protesting that they were not transferred to the countries of their preference. They did not want to apply for asylum in Greece because EU immigration laws dictate that they should remain in the country of entry. The refugees wanted to go to countries where their relatives are. Some of them went on a hunger strike after Greek authorities denied their petitions. Two more lost their lives trying to cross the Greek border. At 3 a.m. today, police went to Syntagma Square and transferred them without incidents to the immigration services and then to accommodations provided by the City of Athens. After the removal of the Syrian refugees, municipal workers cleaned Syntagma Square.
