Lawyers Extend Strike Against New Civil Procedure Code to Dec. 5

Greek lawyers will extend their November 19 three-day strike against the amendments to the Civil Procedure Code from November 25 to December 5, they said on Friday. The amendments were submitted to Parliament in a bill by Justice, Transparency and Human Rights Minister Charalambos Athanassiou. The bar associations said the bill once passed will exacerbate the delays for case processing in courts and cause serious problems. The lawyers also decided to hold a national referendum among the 63 bar associations on December 2 and 3 on whether to accept the new Code and further steps to be taken. Judges will halt court proceedings for a few minutes at all administrative courts from November 24 to December 19, the Administrative Judges Association (EDD) decided on Friday, in protest over several issues including the state of the judiciary system, amendments to the Civil Procedure Code and back pay they are owed.
