Greek ‘SOS Children Villages’ Sends SOS Message

Over the last few years, the financial crisis has been the cause of operational problems for organizations such as ‘SOS Children’s Villages’ — a shelter for homeless children. The purpose of SOS Children’s Villages is to help children who are in need of care because they have lost their parents or are homeless for other reasons. The organization provides a home, food and education until the children are self-sufficient, while Youth Housing is also offered, where young adults have the opportunity to learn a professional trade in order to build a future for an independent adult life. Children are accepted by SOS Children’s Villages solely according to their needs and irrespective of race, nationality and creed. It is a concept that has had a powerful influence on work with abandoned and orphaned children worldwide. ‘SOS Children’s Villages’ General Manager, Giorgos Protopapas stated that the financial crisis has caused a decrease in necessary funds for the proper operation of the shelter. He has made a public appeal to ensure that children are not deprived of basic goods such as food and is requesting the public to donate provisions such as cereal, rice, canned food or even milk. The children’s organization provides shelter to more than 230 children and support through various programs to more than 1,500 families throughout Greece.
