Supreme Court Prosecutor Asks for Exemplary Punishment for Animal Abusers

After a recent wave of cruel attacks against animals, mainly against stray dogs, Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani on Monday called on prosecutors across Greece to act quickly when cases of animal abuse are reported. The prosecutor demanded specifically that offenders should be brought swiftly to justice. In a circular distributed to police stations across Greece, Koutzamani asks authorities to enforce the existing legislation to prevent animal abuse and the exploitation of animals, pushing for “exemplary punishment” to those who torture and abuse animals. Recently, many photographs and videos of brutal acts against animals have been posted on Greek social media. The content’s aim appears to poke fun at animal cruelty. The prosecution of a tavern owner who beat a stray dog to death was a hot topic of discussion by animal rights activists across Greece who sought to use the incident to increase awareness of cruelty to animals. Animal organizations have also been put under pressure on authorities to be more active in the prevention of such acts. The initiative of the Supreme Court prosecutor follows after a series of reports of dogs, cats and other animals being shot, burned, and mutilated in many parts of Greece.
