Stylianides Appointed EU’s Ebola Coordinator

On Thursday night, European Union leaders appointed Greek-Cypriot Christos Stylianides, member of the European Parliament, as the new commissioner for humanitarian affairs and crisis management. One of his main goals will be to coordinate EU efforts to combat the Ebola crisis. According to European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, EU leaders selected Stylianides as the coordinator on Ebola during their meeting in Brussels. The announcement follows a similar move made by the United States, in which Barack Obama appointed Ron Klain as the Ebola “czar” for the country. During confirmation hearings in the European Parliament last month, Stylianides told the European Parliament that he was ready to go to West Africa to personally assess the situation.
