Record Number of Drownings in Greece in 2014

According to latest official data from the Greek Coast Guard, 150 people drowned in Greece from June 1 until July 27. This is a record number considering that during the same period last year, 101 deaths from drowning were recorded. Additionally, another 26 people lost their lives while swimming in the Greek seas from July 28 until August 17. Overall, the number of people drowned from early summer until now has reached 176. Every year, the Port Authority launches a campaign addressed to primary school children, warning them about the dangers at sea and the precautions needed to avoid accidents and drownings. Authorities also report that, every summer, the second cause of death, after traffic accidents, is accidental drowning. During the three days of the Dormition of Virgin Mary weekend (August 15-17), 16 people drowned in various regions of Greece.
