First Tunnel to Link Athens-Thessaloniki Completed
A railway project is in progress to reduce travel time between Athens and Thessaloniki. The distance between the two cities is expected to be covered within three and a half hours or even less by 2016 with a maximum train speed of 160 km. Orthys Tunnel near Domokos is a small part of this project and was completed on Friday, May 30, according to ERGOSE, a subsidiary of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE). Greece can be proud of constructing the biggest transportation tunnels in the Balkans. The task was quite hard to accomplish due to Greece’s difficult geological structure and soft underground rocks. The Greek Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Chrisohoidis stated a few months ago “ Roads and tunnels bring us together, help us communicate and surpass the big financial and social problems we have been dealing with for the past few years.” He also thanked the Europeans for sharing a part of their assets.
