Lemnos Rumbles With Dozens of Aftershocks

The Greek island of Lemnos continued to be shaken during Saturday night by dozens of mild aftershocks following the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that afternoon between Lemnos and Samothrace at a focal depth of 5 km. Seismologists believe the main earthquake took place yesterday and are now expecting one major aftershock. Despite the length of the vibration and the short focal depth of the earthquake, a quick assessment showed minor damage to mainly older houses, as well as three schools, two churches and the island’s airport. After chairing a meeting with various local bodies and the Northern Aegean governor, the general secretary for civil protection and the fire chief, Greek Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis stated that there have been damages to the plastering of 13 properties, two of which are churches. Furthermore, according to Michelakis, three schools have been damaged. “Fourteen engineers from the organization for school buildings and OASP will be coming here to assess the damage, as students are expected to sit their exams next week,” he added.
