Costas Constantinides Elected First Greek and Cypriot to Serve on New York City Council
ASTORIA ? Costas Constantinides won a landslide victory in the 22nd district of the New York City Council on November 5 and will join New York State Senator Michael Gianaris and Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas as Greek-American representatives of Astoria.
With 56 percent of precincts reporting Constantinides was ahead of his closest rival, the Green Party?s Lynn Serpe, by 67 to 15 percent.
Constantinides, a passionate and energetic campaigner, thanked his supporters, campaign team and family at the Ravens Head Public House on Tuesday night. He said he tried to find a different word than the one he had been using ever since his Democratic Primary victory but could not find one better than ?humbling? to describe the experience.
?The people have spoken,? he said, but guests noted that the electorate responded to a man whom they trusted because he listened to them.
