ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek firefighters are using aircrafts to extinguish a large wildfire in a hamlet north of Athens, which has damaged homes and is threatening others.

The fire broke out Monday at Avra near Marathon, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Athens. Officials said it was not immediately clear how many buildings have been damaged by the blaze.

Also Monday, more than 50 firefighters helped by seven aircrafts are fighting another forest blaze in the central Fokida region. No damage to homes or injuries are reported from that fire.

Wildfires are common in Greece during the hot, dry summers. More than 70 people died during huge blazes in 2007.
