Liverpool have made a fresh approach for Shalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, according to the Daily Mirror. Brendan Rodgers has been a long term admirer of the Greek defender, and was strongly linked with a move earlier in the transfer window. It appeared a deal was off the table however, with the Reds holding concerns over the 21-year-old’s ongoing knee problem, and are now trying to thrash out ail-safe guarantees in any deal. It is understood the Anfield club are looking to propose an offer of taking the powerful centre back on a seasons long loan with the assurances of completing a £12million transfer next summer should he erase all injury doubts. Shalke would prefer straight cash for the player, but accept the fact he has been sidelined since November with knee ligament trouble may weaken their case. Papadopoulos has finally returned to full training with the Bundesliga side, and has spoke of his happiness at nearing a return to first team football. “It was a great feeling to be back… even though it was very tiring, ” he said. “I make progress every day and am happy that I will soon be able to train with the team again.” Reports emerging from Greece suggest a deal is close, although the defender will have to first prove himself in a full medical within the next 10 days. A move may see Martin Skrtel make an Anfield exit, with the Slovakian defender linked with a move that would see him reunited with Rafael Benitez at Napoli
