Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias participates in the 2nd International Conference on Cultural Heritage (Athens, 2-3.6.2021)
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, participated, on Tuesday, June 2, via a recorded address, in the opening of the 2nd International Conference on Cultural Heritage, entitled “Hellenism and Islamic culture. The positive aspects of interaction and its prospects” and organized by the Foreign Affairs Institute in collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Addressing the conference, which is held online, the Minister highlighted the historical and cultural ties developed between the Greek and Islamic culture, through long-standing contacts and interactions. He noted that the wealth of these historical and cultural experiences as well as the religious traditions provide an inspiration for a creative and peaceful coexistence, beneficial to all the peoples of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Unfortunately, decisions to convert into mosques the Hagia Sophia and the Monastery of Chora, two timeless symbols of the coexistence of peoples, cultures and religions and World Heritage Sites, do not contribute to this effort. Kate Winslet shows there’s more to middle age than a saggy belly
Mare of Easttown would have been just another whodunnit without the rich detail of an older woman’s story Kate Winslet has always had guts. But for her to have a belly, let alone one that wobbles and jiggles in the way most 45-year-old women’s middles quite unremarkably do, is still apparently a thing so shocking as to make headline news. This week the star of the cult TV drama Mare of Easttown disclosed that she had refused her director’s offer to edit out footage of her “bulgy bit of belly” from a sex scene, arguing that her character should be allowed to look like the woman she was meant to be: a middle-aged small town detective who has carried two children, unwinds after an exhausting day with a beer rather than a gym session, and has rather more serious things to worry about than the odd flabby bit hanging over her jeans. “She’s a fully functioning, flawed woman with a body and a face that moves in a way that is synonymous with her age and her life and where she comes from. I think we’re starved of that a bit,” as Winslet, who not only starred in but executive produced the show, puts it. Not since the eponymous heroine of Shirley Valentine ran away to Greece in search of one last adventure, and marvelled at her new lover’s willingness to kiss her stretchmarks, has a naked stomach on film been deemed to make such a statement. Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis meets with the German Minister of State for Europe, Michael Roth (02.06.2021)
Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis and German Minister of State for Europe, Michael Roth held yesterday in Athens expanded talks focusing on Next Generation EU, the European Digital Certificate, migration and other issues on the European agenda. Against the backdrop of the Acropolis, Mr. Varvitsiotis warmly welcomed his German counterpart, highlighted the importance of in-person bilateral meetings and described him as a highly committed European and true friend of Greece. In his remarks, the Alternate Minister made special mention of the EU Recovery Plan (Next Generation EU), describing it as the largest European project. "After the completion of the ratification of Own Resources Decision by all member states, we are ready to implement our major project," he noted. He specifically welcomed the role of Germany in its creation. Referring to the importance of the Green Digital Certificate, Mr. Varvitsiotis said that "it will allow us to travel freely in the coming months." He also underlined Greece’s readiness to welcome German friends without quarantine, without any other document, but only with the Green Digital Certificate, in order to enjoy their holidays in Greece. Referring to the role of Greece in the wider developments on the EU’s periphery, the Alternate Minister conveyed to Mr. Roth and the German side the Greek government’s interest for Greece to attend the upcoming Berlin Conference on Libya. For us, after the restoration of diplomatic relations with Libya, following the two visits of the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister to Libya and a visit of the Libyan President to Greece, and given the fact that we have committed forces to join Operation Irini, "it is important to be present," he noted. The Alternate Minister added that Mr. Roth took notice of the Greek request and that he would convey it to the highest level. In addition, as regards the crucial issue of migration, Mr. Varvitsiotis underscored the need for EU member states to overcome their disagreements and reach a new Pact on Migration and Asylum that will address this common European challenge.
