Preston bus station review – a glorious reprieve
Earmarked for demolition just six years ago, the brutalist gem that is Ove Arup’s Preston bus station has been sympathetically renovated, right down to the route numbers How could there have been any doubt? Why was it even considered that the majestic concrete battleship that is Preston bus station might be demolished? Yet it was, a few years back, to make way for a proposed shopping centre of uncertain viability. Central government, in the face of prolonged and well-made arguments for its listing, hedged and prevaricated until deciding in 2013 that, yes, it was worthy of protection. Now, as its renovation is completed, it’s plain that the bus station deserves to stand alongside the other robust civic masonry that Preston, like many industrial cities, boasts: the neo-Greek Harris Museum and Art Gallery; the Edwardian baroque Sessions House. It’s also again clear (see, too, the Southbank Centre in London) that the listing of postwar architecture is the last, best defence of public space that the tattered planning system can provide. Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, G. Katrougalos, attends the 3rd Forum of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (Catania, 24.05.2018)
“The biggest problem Europe is facing today is the sharp rise in inequalities within and between states; inequalities that undermine both the economy and democracy.” Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Katrougalos stressed this in his address to the 3rd Forum of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region, which is taking place in Catania.“In contrast,” Mr. Katrougalos added, “these EU initiatives for the countries of the Adriatic and Ionian Region, which link EU member states with countries that are candidates or potential candidates for accession, enhance the region’s political and economic stability. We need regional strategies that will contribute to just development that benefits all of the European Union’s citizens. No citizen should be left behind and driven to poverty or unemployment.” “Greece,” Mr. Katrougalos highlighted, “promotes similar policies in the wider Balkan region, strengthening cooperation in the sectors of energy, transport and trade.”Issues of maritime and onshore cross-border cooperation during the period 2021-2027, the migration- and refugee-related challenges for the countries in the region, and the potential for further cooperation were discussed at the Forum.Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia are the countries participating in the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region. 10 classic European islands on a budget
With sunshine, superb beaches and charming towns, Ibiza, Mallorca, the famous Greek islands et als often come with A-list prices. Here’s how to enjoy them without spending too much cash Even the epic photos don’t quite prepare you for Santorini, with its encircling black cliffs. The island was formed by an enormous volcanic eruption in 1600 BC, and the subsequently collapsing caldera formed these sheer faces. Its extraordinary landscapes justly attract hordes of visitors and, unsurprisingly, Santorini, or Thira in Greek, is one of the pricier Greek isles. STAY The island’s volcanic soil produces renowned wine, and at Caveland caves dug from the volcanic pumice to be used as wine cellars now provide fun and stylish accommodation. Dorm beds cost from €23, doubles (book ahead: they sell out quickly) from €70. HANG OUT Atlantis in the north-western town of Oia may just be the best bookshop on the planet; it certainly has one of the best settings, overlooking the sea in this whitewashed old town. Born through passion, and a bit of whimsy, it now runs food, film and literary festivals through the year. EAT Naoussa calls itself a traditional taverna, although its prices are a little high. The food is good, though, and factor in the location (its terrace is a good place to watch the sun set over the caldera) and it’s a bargain (main courses from €10.50). DAY TRIP Boat trips run to Thirasia, another sliver of the island before its eruption, on the other side of the caldera. If you can, bring a moped, stay the night and explore what Santorini must have been like 30 years ago (there are a few old-style rooms to let from €40 for a double). WAY TO GO There is an airport (served by easyJet and Norwegian from Gatwick), but though it’s a longish ferry trip from Athens (6-9 hours, greeceferries.com, from €40), nothing beats entering the caldera by sea. It does leave you with the problem of making your way up the cliffs on the switchback road. A donkey ride is traditional, if not exactly comfortable. ANDY BOSTOCK Continue reading...
