New simulations suggest dark energy might not exist

[dark energy millennium run]Max-Planck Institute/Millennium Run Ever since the late 1990s, physicists have been fairly certain that the Universe isn't only getting bigger, it also appears to be expanding at an ever increasing rate. A mysterious force called dark energy is currently thought to be responsible for this accelerating growth, but a new study raises the possibility that what seems to be a type of energy could be an illusion caused by the changing structure of the Universe. Physicists from Loránd University in Hungary and the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii are now questioning if approximations in Einstein's equations introduced "serious side effects" that gave the illusion of a vast, unknown force pushing space apart. If it exists, dark energy would make up about 68 percent of the energy in the observable Universe, but at just 10-27 kilograms per square metre, it would be incredibly hard to spot in the laboratory. In addition to the question of acceleration, dark energy also helps explain things like the overall shape of the Universe and the patterns of matter we see rippling through space. The thing is, right now it's little more than an empty box without any other properties to describe the nature of its existence. As such, it's currently assumed to be a fundamental part of empty space known as the cosmological constant, represented by the Greek letter lambda (Λ). Back in the early 20th century, Einstein proposed the cosmological constant as a kind of fudge-factor to explain why all the mass scattered through the Universe wasn't pulling back together under the attraction of its own gravity. When Edwin Hubble made it clear the Universe wasn't just resisting collapse, but actually expanding, the cosmological constant was thrown in the bin. It's now known that the Universe appeared to grow at a slower rate in its youth than today, making the cosmological constant useful again as a way to explain this increase in speed. Put together with another hypothetical 'black box' factor — dark matter, which would comprise of a further 27 percent of the known Universe — we get the Lambda Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) model to explain how the Universe evolved. While Einstein's general theory of relativity was responsible for laying much of the groundwork for this model, the mathematics isn't always so easy to apply, prompting physicists to crunch parts of it down using educated assumptions. [universe galaxy count nasa goods]NASA/ESA/the GOODS Team/M. Giavalisco But in this latest study, the researchers argue these approximations have ignored potentially significant influences of large scale structures within the Universe. "Einstein's equations of general relativity that describe the expansion of the Universe are so complex mathematically that for a hundred years no solutions accounting for the effect of cosmic structures have been found," said László Dobos from Eötvös Loránd University. If it were possible to step outside of the Universe for a moment and look down upon it, there'd be threads of galaxies called super clusters lining what look like relatively empty spaces. The ΛCDM model assumes a uniform expansion that progressively gets faster thanks to the increasing push of dark energy overcoming the pull of dark and normal matter distributed evenly throughout space. Yet according to the physicists involved in this new research, the large scale structures — 'bubbles' of seemingly empty space and the galaxies surrounding them — would create zones where expansion occurs at different rates, almost like mini-universes. By mathematically modelling the effect of gravity on millions of particles representing dark matter, the team managed to recreate the bunching up of matter in the early Universe in such a way that it looked like the large scale galaxy structures. While the Universe in their model still expands, the individual differences in how these bubbles expand averages out to an overall acceleration. "Our findings rely on a mathematical conjecture which permits the differential expansion of space, consistent with general relativity, and they show how the formation of complex structures of matter affects the expansion," said Dobos. "These issues were previously swept under the rug but taking them into account can explain the acceleration without the need for dark energy." The model makes its own necessary assumptions, but if it stands up to scrutiny it could explain why the Universe's expansion seems to be accelerating, all without the need for negative pressure. While the idea itself is new, the search for ways to get around the need for a mysterious type of energy has produced a number of creative solutions in recent years. Earlier this year, a study published in _Science_ suggested dark energy could be explained as a kind of deficit, as if the Universe was 'leaking energy' at some point in its evolution. While it breaks one of the big rules of physics (energy can't be lost or created) it would also take care of the nagging question mark over what 68 percent of the Universe is made out of. There's no doubting dark energy is a tough nut to crack, so it might take thinking outside the box — if not outside the whole Universe — to find a solution. This research was published in _Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society_. NOW WATCH: Hackers and governments can see you through your phone’s camera — here’s how to protect yourself

A Le Pen win in the French election would place a 'sword of Damocles' above the eurozone

[marine le pen]Pascal Rossignol/Reuters The French election is the major upcoming political risk in Europe. The markets are concerned about a possible Marine Le Pen victory as one of her key campaign promises is to hold a referendum on France exiting the euro currency bloc. The departure of one of the Eurozone’s leading countries would most likely lead to the breakdown of the Eurozone. The instability created by Brexit as well as anti EU rhetoric from Trump and others exacerbates the probability of a Frexit. Since the end of 2009, the Eurozone has undergone periodic economic crises. Initial cracks in the economic well being of the region first appeared post the 2008 global financial crisis, when concerns arose about the ability of the peripheral countries to meet their debt payments, notably Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Ireland. Marine Le Pen’s victory would undoubtedly lead to a deep political and economic crisis in the Eurozone. Investors head into this current event with some concerns: What are the odds for this tail risk to materialise? Does Marine Le Pen’s victory mean “Frexit”? How has the volatility of the French OAT yields and their correlation with the other members of the Eurozone evolved since the Eurozone crisis? BACKGROUND There are five candidates for the presidency: Marine Le Pen (Eurosceptic and anti-immigration), Francois Fillon (Center-right), Emmanuel Macron (Center), Benoit Hamon (Socialist) and Jean-Luc Melenchon (Socialist). The first round of the election is the 23rd of April and if no candidate gets above 50% of the vote, there is a second round two weeks later between the top two candidates. In the last few months, three events could have increased the probability of Le Pen‘s victory: * Fillon withdrawing his candidature, especially after being summoned by a judge to testify * Hamon and Melenchon uniting * The victory of the Populist Party in the Netherlands None of these events ended up happening, and the first round debate last week was dominated by Macron, so the market now expects Le Pen and Macron to win the first round the 23rd of April, and Macron to win the second round which is happening the 7th of May. On the back of this, the market has been reducing their risk hedges. In most polls Macron leads Le Pen by 20% in the second round, which seems like a big gap to close one month before the elections.  However, the ramifications of a Le Pen victory are so significant that it is worth taking it seriously. ARE CORRELATIONS TELLING US ANYTHING? Correlations so far are telling a tale of a gradual deterioration of the French fiscal picture – France shifting from “core” to “semi-core” – rather than of a risk of a Eurozone break-up. Before the Eurozone crisis, the correlation matrix showed us that all spreads across the Eurozone were moving together, as a bloc. During the Eurozone crisis, looking at Q4 2011, we can see a clear demarcation between the peripheral countries, and the “core” countries. France, a “core” country at the time was very highly correlated with Germany, and lowly correlated with the peripheral countries. In recent months we have seen that the correlation between the Bunds and the OAT has decreased substantially (from 0.92 during the crisis to 0.59 now), and the correlation between France and the peripheral countries has increased substantially. The dynamic shows that the market considers the current situation for France to be similar to the situation faced by the peripheral countries in the event of a Le Pen victory. In the near future, no matter the outcome of the elections, it seems unlikely that France trades again like a core country, given that the election has brought renewed focus on issues the country faces, such as its big deficit and its need for reforms first. [French Election]J.P. Morgan Asset Management [French election]J.P. Morgan Asset Management [French Election]J.P. Morgan Asset Management WHAT IF LE PEN WINS? DOES IT MEAN FREXIT? There are two main scenarios if Le Pen wins: * In the first and most likely scenario Marine Le Pen wins, but her party will probably be under-represented in the parliament with only four seats in the lower and upper houses (the parliamentary elections take place in June). Without parliamentary support, she will have to cohabitate with a hostile government and most likely won’t be able to organise a referendum for the “Frexit”… at least according to the current constitutional rules. * In the second and more destabilizing scenario, Le Pen wins and she has the parliamentary support. In that case she would organise the referendum which would likely lead to the French people deciding to leave the Eurozone (Frexit). WHAT DOES FREXIT MEAN? Frexit would create balance sheet stress and solvency challenges. Under the tail scenario, there would be a FX redenomination and a new yield curve which would likely lead to higher yields in French bonds. This is a big risk given the fiscal deficit in France. European investors will face two main risks: * The risk that their currency is devalued when it leaves the euro. Leaving the euro currency bloc would lead to a substantial depreciation of the new franc vs. the euro. We have seen that before with Argentina in 2002. The devaluation would create an increase of inflation and a risk of capital outflow. * The risk that their bonds are restructured like during the Greek crisis. It means new cash flow schedules, multiple haircuts on French sovereign bonds and more uncertainties. This is a tail scenario which remains a very unlikely event, but it has important ramifications so it should not be overlooked. It would be too complacent to think that in the case of a Marine Le Pen win in the presidential elections, parliament would completely stand against the Front National’s willingness to leave the Eurozone. The signal sent by the French people would indeed be very strong and rules and laws can always be changed or circumvented. There would be “sword of Damocles” above the Eurozone, its institutions, and all European assets. As we have seen in previous elections, outcomes that start off as unthinkable, and then appear unlikely, can go on to become reality.   _J.P. Morgan Asset Management does not predict outcomes of any political events, nor do we voice firm-wide opinions on any political candidates._ NOW WATCH: Here's why some Hong Kong skyscrapers have gaping holes

Bob Dylan receives Nobel Prize in literature in Sweden

Source: fox2now.com - Saturday, April 01, 2017 Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan finally received his Nobel Prize in literature Saturday at a private ceremony in Stockholm, according to a statement posted online by the head of the Swedish Academy. The presentation came five months after the academy announced Dylan was the winner and more than three months after the formal award ceremony, which Dylan didn’t attend because of “pre-existing commitments.” Singer Patti Smith stood in for him. But Dylan was in Stockholm this weekend to perform concerts and the private ceremony was arranged. It’s not known what Dylan had to say about the award. Swedish media reported no cameras were present at the ceremony. There were no comments made to media by Dylan,or any member of the academy, either before or after the event. Upon the announcement of Dylan’s award in October, the academy’s permanent secretary, Sara Danius, said Dylan “is a great poet in the English-speaking tradition,” drawing parallels between his work and that of ancient Greek poets. Saturday, she issued the following statement on Dylan’s receipt of the award: “Earlier today the Swedish Academy met with Bob Dylan for a private ceremony in Stockholm, during which Dylan received his gold medal and diploma. Twelve members of the Academy were present. Spirits were high. Champagne was had. “Quite a bit of time was spent looking closely at the gold medal, in particular the beautifully crafted back, an image of a young man sitting under All Related | More on Bob Dylan
