Euro hits four-month low as Mario Draghi hints at more stimulus – as it happened

Mario Draghi suggests ECB could extend its QE programme in December, and suggests ECB might taper its asset-purchase scheme * Draghi: Committed to doing more if needed * Draghi: We didn’t discuss extending QE * Draghi: Not likely to abruptly end QE * Earlier: Eurozone interest rates and QE unchanged 5.54pm BST With nothing much in the European Central Bank latest deliberations to rock the boat, stock markets managed to end the day in positive territory, even as the euro was put under pressure. The banking sector was boosted by this week’s positive results from US financial businesses, with BNY Mellon being the latest to report better than expected figures. So the final scores showed: 5.10pm BST MEANWHILE OVER IN GREEC, MARIO DRAGHI’S STATEMENTS TODAY ARE NOT GOING DOWN WELL. Helena Smith reports from Athens: The ECB president’s assertion this afternoon that it is premature to contemplate Greece being included in the bank’s quantitative easing program before its debt is made sustainable has landed with the force of a lead balloon in Athens. “It effectively kills any prospect of debt forgiveness any time soon,” said one well-placed source in the governing Syriza party. “How, in God’s name, is the economy ever to recover after seven years of recession and internal deflation?” Both investors and government officials say inclusion in the program would be a mood changer for a country enduring its worst slump in modern times. Prime minister Alexis Tsipras, who has spent the day pushing for debt relief in meetings with top EU officials in Brussels, says inclusion in the program is essential if the debt-stricken nation is to return to capital markets and finally get some form of primary debt relief. Greece has been excluded from QE because of its low credit rating. Tsipras has called for a debt deal to be concluded by December when Athens hopes to have completed its second review of the economy with international inspectors representing the EU and IMF. The audit begins in earnest tomorrow when Tsipras will also be pressing the point in talks with German chancellor Angela Merkel. Continue reading...

Californians should be embarrassed by how much they hype overrated In-N-Out Burger

[InNOut3.11 1024x733]Yelp Hillary Clinton's campaign staff treated themselves to a hearty meal of West Coast favorite In-N-Out before their red eye trip back to New York. I can't blame them for choosing the burger chain to celebrate what most outlets, including Business Insider's Josh Barro, called a Clinton win. If I were in that neck of the woods, I would certainly choose In-N-Out Burger over other options. But I have to wonder — why is this? In-N-Out makes a good burger, to be sure. It's flavorful, tasty, and fresh. But I've had much better burgers. In fact, in a face-off I conducted, Shake Shack clearly beat out In-N-Out in the burger category. It wasn't even close. So what is it that would keep me coming back to In-N-Out when there are objectively (in my mind) better options? It can only come down to one thing: psychology. Namely, the scarcity effect and the bandwagon effect. And the two are intertwined. In-N-Out has plenty of locations, but its 313 restaurants are densely concentrated on the West Coast. This regional scarcity has played with the minds of burger fans and West Coasters, realizing they can't get their precious burgers when they travel to other areas. This has tricked them into thinking In-N-Out is somehow special because it is relatively rare. Even if the actual product doesn't deserve the hype, more join as the bandwagon without even realizing it, falling for the monster this hype has become. Things like the secret menu feed into this, creating a cult around the brand. Tweet Embed: https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/788968727362404352 Clinton staffers' post-debate, meal of choice on their red-eye back to NY: @innoutburger pic.twitter.com/tLjWem4OTJ Californians should be embrassed that they fell for this psychological trick hook, line, and sinker, and have even gone as far as to integrate it into the regional identity. There's no economic reason that In-N-Out can't expand faster and farther than it is now. Plenty of other fast food chains and restaurants have done so and maintained quality. It are just aware that it will loose some of the Cali cultural cache that it's built up along its 67-year history.  Don't get me wrong — In-N-Out makes a good burger. But no burger can possibly live up to the hype surrounding In-N-Out. NOW WATCH: We tried the trendy restaurant that could become the Chipotle of Greek food
