EgyptAir crash investigators: Cockpit audio shows that pilots attempted to put out a fire onboard

[A flight recorder retrieved from the crashed EgyptAir flight MS804 is seen in this undated picture issued June 17, 2016. ]Thomson Reuters CAIRO (AP) — Pilots tried to extinguish a fire on board the EgyptAir flight that crashed into the Mediterranean Sea in May, Egyptian investigators said Tuesday after analyzing a recovered cockpit voice recorder. The recordings were consistent with data previously recovered from the plane's wreckage that showed heat, fire, and smoke around a bathroom and the avionics area, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity because an official press statement has yet to be released. The crash of the flight from Paris to Cairo killed all 66 people on board. The pilots made no distress call, and no militant group has claimed to have brought the aircraft down, deepening the mystery surrounding its fate. The Egyptian investigators say no theories — including terrorism — are being ruled out, especially since it is rare for such a catastrophic fire to break out so suddenly. EgyptAir Flight 804 disappeared from radar about 2:45 a.m. local time on May 19 between the Greek island of Crete and the Egyptian coast. Radar data showed the aircraft had been cruising normally in clear skies before it turned 90 degrees left, then a full 360 degrees to the right as it plummeted from 38,000 feet (11,582 meters) to 15,000 feet (4,572 meters). It disappeared when it was at an altitude of about 10,000 feet (3,048 meters). Deep ocean search teams have been recovering human remains and bringing them to Egypt's port city of Alexandria. French authorities opened a manslaughter inquiry late last month, but said there is no evidence so far to link the crash to terrorism.

Kepler laid the groundwork for this amazing science joke 400 years ago - and it finally paid off

[zeus greek gods olympus]Wikimedia Commons Even in the space age, a little knowledge of the classics comes in handy sometimes. If you're a fan of Greco-Roman mythology and NASA, you may have noticed that the space probe now orbiting Jupiter has a name with a familiar ring: Juno. In myth, Jupiter (Zeus for the Greeks) was king of the gods, and Juno/Hera was his queen. Their marriage was a troubled one, mostly because of Jupiter's rampant infidelity. When a Renaissance astronomer named Simon Marius claimed that he had discovered that the planet Jupiter had four large moons (we've since found several more), he took Johannes Kepler's suggestion to name them for four of the god's most famous lovers: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. He said the naming should be taken "as a jest." (Galileo, who published this discovery first, is generally given credit for the find — but his proposed names didn't stick. He simply called them the "Medicean planets" and gave them each a number.) When NASA named their solar-powered spacecraft for Jupiter's jealous wife, Juno, it could be seen as all in favor of this grand joke, some people on reddit (where we first saw this idea) and Twitter observed: Tweet Embed: https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/728761772107124736 @NASAJuno boy will Jupiter and his mistresses be in trouble after the wife shows up! Thanks for ruining the party NASA! Jupiter would also drape himself in clouds to hide his, um, extracurricular activities. So Juno, in return, would scour the heavens, hoping to catch that cheating son-of-a-gun in the act. Planet Jupiter, a gas giant, has also mostly been hidden from view by local cloud cover. By skimming the tops of the clouds, NASA is hoping Juno gets a (less salacious) view of what's really going on with Jupiter in unprecedented detail. NOW WATCH: A NASA spacecraft just recorded these haunting sounds around Jupiter

French legislators urge intel overhaul after Paris attacks

PARIS (AP) — A French parliamentary investigation found multiple intelligence failures before the Islamic extremist attacks that killed 147 people in Paris last year, lawmakers said Tuesday, urging the creation of a U.S.-style counterterrorism agency to better prevent further violence. All the extremists involved in the 2015 attacks — on newspaper Charlie Hebdo, a kosher market, the national stadium, Parisian cafes and the Bataclan concert hall — had been previously flagged to authorities, said conservative legislator Georges Fenech, who headed the investigation commission. Pietrasanta noted that the attack that killed 49 people in Orlando, Florida, shows that "there is no zero risk," and said France remains under threat even if it overhauls its intelligence services. The parliamentary report is based on six months of interviews with nearly 200 people and visits to Turkey, Greece, Belgium and Europol police agency headquarters in The Hague, as well as to the United States and other destinations. The lawmakers said security measures put in place after the attacks were ineffective, and accused Belgian authorities of being slow to stop the only surviving member of the Paris attack team, Salah Abdeslam, now in isolation in a French prison.

This floating garbage collector is longer than a football field - and it could get 1,000 times bigger

[ocean cleanup]Erwin Zwart/The Ocean Cleanup A radical solution to ocean pollution just touched down in the North Sea. Developed by the Dutch nonprofit The Ocean Cleanup, the 328-foot-long barrier is designed to pull garbage from the surrounding waters so that it can be removed and recycled. The device uses a system of underwater barriers that are anchored to the sea floor. Over time, currents move trash toward the barriers, which trap the litter until it can be collected for proper disposal.  The barrier is a prototype, and is currently being used in a pilot study. If successful, it could lead to a full-scale program in which the nonprofit brings a 62-mile-long barrier to the infamous Great Pacific garbage patch.  [noaa garbage patch map]Erwin Zwart/The Ocean CleanupThis patch, known formally as a gyre, is located between California and Hawaii. Due to a phenomenon caused by Earth's rotation, tons of plastic makes its way toward the gyre every year, where it collects and circles around for years.  Ocean Cleanup CEO Boyan Slat says he was just 16 years old when he realized during a trip to Greece how bad the problem of ocean pollution really was. He made it his mission to fight pollution on a global scale. Slat's latest prototype uses a V-shaped design to guide plastic toward the middle of the array. A collection bin then traps the garbage so cleanup crews can remove it and recycle it. [The Ocean Cleanup]Erwin Zwart/The Ocean CleanupSlat says his method could cut the size of the Great Pacific garbage patch in half over a 10-year period, but some scientists are skeptical about the scope of Ocean Cleanup's project. They say the mission distracts from the larger goal of getting people to stop polluting the oceans – and that Slat's solution could become a 62-mile-long excuse to dump more trash into the ocean, since there'd already be a barrier to catch it. [Ocean cleanup]Erwin Zwart/The Ocean CleanupSlat and his team will test the prototype until 2020. If the data shows proof of concept and the materials don't rupture, they'll bring it to the Pacific for full-scale application. Plastic pollution is an enormous problem, so perhaps that means it needs an equally sizable solution. NOW WATCH: What would happen if all the fish disappeared
