SYRIZA Falling Short of Majority in Greece Early Elections
SYRIZA of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has earned 35.3% of Sunday's early elections in Greece - the biggest share of the vote, Interior Ministry data reveals. Current results, with 20 percent of votes counted (as of 21:30 EEST/20:30 CEST) a few hours after polls closed, also suggest a coalition government will be needed. But Panos Kammenos, the leader of SYRIZA's former coalition partner Independent Greeks (ANEL), has already announced it will join hands with Tsipras again. New Democracy head Vangelis Meimarakis has meanwhile conceded defeat as early results showed his party was trailing behind SYRIZA, garnering just 28.1 percent. "The election result appears to be forming comprehensively with SYRIZA and Mr Tsipras coming first," English-language Kathimerini quotes him as saying. Meimarakis also called on Tsipras to form "the government that is necessary" and bring a proposal to Parliament. Tsipras's result is below the minimum of 3.8% which under Greece's electoral law would have secured a majority for his party. SYRIZA, however, stands chances to enjoy a relatively comfortable majority in Parliament, with one projection giving in 144 seets compared to 75 for New Democracy (the winner of elections is automatically awarded a 50-seat bonus). Greece's legislature has 300 lawmakers. Results make Golden Dawn once again the third-biggest party in the country's Parliament, with 7.3% of the vote. Socialist PASOK comes fourth, at 6.5 percent, whereas Communists from KKE have mustered 5.5% according to the partial count. Several other parties have also made it beyond the three-percet threshold. These are centrist To Potami (3.77%) ANEL (at 3.73%), and the Union of Centrists (3.49%). Sunday's elections have been marked by a significant abstention rate - of 45.2% - compared to 36.4% in the January 25 snap vote.
Greek leftist Syriza leads with 35.3 percent of vote in election
The leftist Syriza party of Alexis Tsipras has won 35.3 percent of the vote in Sunday's Greek national election based on 25 percent of votes counted, the Interior Ministry said on its website. Conservative New Democracy is on 28.1 percent, the ministry said. Based on the same vote count, the turnout was 54.4 percent.
Greece's Syriza to seek alliance with Independent Greeks
Greece's leftist Syriza party will seek to form a government with the Independent Greeks, its former coalition partner, a Syriza source said on Sunday after early national election results put the party in the lead. Official results showed that with more than 30 percent of Sunday's votes counted, Syriza were on 35.3 percent, against 28.15 percent for rivals New Democracy. Based on that calculation, Syriza would gain 144 seats in the 300-member parliament, and New Democracy 75.
Syriza’s victory shows that Greece wants a permanent break from its past
Since agreeing the bailout in July, prime minister Alexis Tsipras’s judgment has come under severe scrutiny. But the older parties could offer no alternative plan for the future The initial results from Greece’s second general election this year, and its fifth since October 2009, suggest that the prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, has a level of political durability that few could have predicted – and that a large section of Greek society is willing to be incredibly patient with him. Today’s was the third high-stakes vote that Tsipras has won this year, after January’s elections and July’s referendum. For the past few weeks it seemed that this would be a close contest, but it turned out almost to be a walk in the park for the Syriza leader. Despite today’s impressive feat, tempered by the record low turnout, there is little for Tsipras to celebrate Continue reading...
Greece: the election is over, the economic crisis is not
Alexis Tsipris’s renewed mandate will allow him to push for more debt relief and an easing of austerity conditions What a difference eight months can make. When Syriza came to power in Greece in January it did so on a wave of voter enthusiasm. There was talk of an austerity party breaking the mould of post “great recession” politics. Europe’s political establishment looked on in horror. The financial markets trembled. The Diary Of Syria's Piano Man On His Escape To Europe
For four long years of Syria's civil war, Ayham Ahmad found a way to bear the unbearable. The 27-year-old musician took his piano out onto the streets of Yarmouk, a Palestinian refugee camp near Damascus, and played songs about the struggle to survive with a chorus of family, friends and local children. They sang of hunger, friends who had fled or had been killed, and their longing for peace. After Islamic State militants stormed the camp in April and the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front extended its control over the area, Ahmad moved his wife, son and daughter out of Yarmouk. Shortly after, an Islamist fighter stopped Ahmad as he tried to wheel his piano out of the camp and set his instrument on fire. Ahmad, whose songs once implored Palestinians and Syrians not to risk their lives trying to sail to Europe, finally decided it was time to leave. As he set out in the hope of providing a better life for his family, Ahmad has documented his journey in a series of Facebook posts he calls "Diaries of a Traveler in the Sea." (Ahmad's first name can also be transliterated as Aeham, per his Facebook account.) He also sent The WorldPost images and audio messages documenting his journey in Arabic, which are compiled below with his earlier Facebook posts, to tell the story of the odyssey in his own words. _This story will be updated as Ahmad continues his journey and shares more stories along the way._ LEAVING SYRIA _ Early September_ I left the camp after life had stopped. It was the breaking point. I had to leave. I left Yarmouk to go to Damascus, but I suffered there even more. So I traveled to Homs, and from Homs to Hama, and from Hama and to the Turkish border. The journey cost around $5,000 in payments to the smugglers and there were a lot of problems along the way. I walked for five hours through the mountains to reach Antakya, on the Syrian-Turkish border. From there, I took a bus for 16 hours to arrive in Izmir. I witnessed many things on this strange journey. The smugglers took our money but didn't ensure our safe arrival. There were many Syrians and Palestinian refugees who were living in Syria with us on the journey. THE SEARCH FOR A DINGHY _Sept. 10, 2015_ When I arrived in Izmir, I saw lots of people spending their days and nights on the streets, in the mosques, and in the parks because they couldn't afford to stay in a hotel. I DECIDED TO TAKE A RUBBER DINGHY TO EUROPE, BUT WHEN I SAW THE BOATS THEY HAD AROUND 70 PEOPLE IN THEM, CRAMMED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER LIKE MATCHES IN A MATCHBOX. The sight of these boats made me feel weak, but I knew I had to complete the journey for my children Ahmed and Kenan, and for my mother and father and my wife. I had to complete the journey to Germany so that I could be in a good place for my family. So I decided that I would still take one of the dinghies, at a cost of around $1,250. When we boarded the rubber dinghy, we were surprised to find that the motor engine was rusted and decaying. The engine wouldn't start several times. The smuggler didn't do anything to help us. He just kept shouting and screaming at people. There were sharks clustering around the boat, very close to me. So we decided to wait and try again the following morning. CROSSING THE SEA _ Sept. 16, 2015_ The boat was scheduled to depart at 5 a.m. The smuggler asked us not to turn on our phones, not to smoke and not to turn on any lights so the Turkish and Greek coast guards wouldn't see us. I slept in the woods for about an hour. When I woke I found some guys I was traveling with setting up the inflatable boat. The smuggler is meant to do this, but we just wanted to get there safely so decided to do it ourselves. We had made a deal with the smuggler that he wouldn't let more than 40 people get in with us, but we ended up with more than 67 people and a lot of baggage. The water we crossed looks like the Black Sea or the Mediterranean Sea. There were very strong waves. But on that day the sea was quiet and smooth. Thanks to God. We trusted in God and God protected us. REACHING EUROPE'S SHORES _Sept. 16, 2015_ I finally reached the borders of Europe, the Greek island of Lesbos. The sights I saw there were also terrible -- I saw many people, including the elderly, sleeping in the streets. It was really upsetting. I felt that Europe was not more beautiful than my home in Yarmouk, but because of the presence of the militants in the camp, life there had become unbearable. I want to return to the camp as soon as the situation improves. Europe is a land of freedom. Now that I'm in Europe I can continue to keep singing about life in Yarmouk and the people who live there. -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
